Isotretinoin (Acnetrex)

This medication is used to treat moderate to severe acne that has not responded to topical medications. It works by decreasing sebum production. Studies have shown that a complete course of isotretinoin treatment can prevent acne from coming back. 

Isotretinoin off label uses: rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, pityriasis rubra pilaris, condyloma acuminatum, granuloma annulare, Darier’s disease, systemic cutaneous lupus erythematosus, nonmelanoma skin cancer, and hidradenitis suppurativa.

Your acne may worsen during the first few days of taking this drug, and it may take up to 1-2 months before you notice the full benefit of this medication. If severe acne returns, a second course of treatment may be started after you have stopped taking the drug for 2 months. 

Possible side effects:

• Dryness of skin and mucosa (dry lips, dry eyes, possible nosebleeds)
• Acne worsening initially
• Thinning hair
• Muscle/joint pains
• Difficulty seeing at night
• Elevation of liver enzymes and cholesterol
• Skin rash
• Depression

• If a person takes isotretinoin while pregnant, this medication can cause:

  • Severe birth defects

  • Miscarriage

  • Stillbirth
